Out and about enjoying the sunny weather this weekend?

Whether you're planning a trip to the beach, a countryside walk, or a drive, here are a few important reminders -

🥤 Stay Hydrated â€“ If you're heading out, especially for long periods, make sure to carry plenty of water to stay hydrated in the heat.

đźš— Plan Ahead â€“ If you're travelling by car, plan your journey in advance. Expect delays in popular areas and ensure your vehicle is road-ready, especially in hot conditions.

🏖️ Respect Our Spaces â€“ If you're visiting the beach or any of our beautiful green spaces, please take your litter home with you. Let’s all do our part to keep these areas clean and enjoyable for everyone.

🚦 Camber Beach Visitors â€“ Camber can attract over 20,000 visitors a day during peak times. Parking is limited and roads can become heavily congested, with long delays. Consider alternative destinations or travel times to avoid long waits in the heat.

🌊 Water Safety – #FloatToLive â€“ If you get into difficulty in the water, remember, lean back, extend your arms and legs, and float like a starfish. This simple action can save your life. #RespectTheWater

We’ll have officers out and about throughout the weekend to support our communities. Please enjoy the sunshine responsibly and look out for one another.

Being a victim of burglary can be deeply distressing and affect your sense of safety. Even one incident can impact an entire community. Here are some simple steps to help protect your home and belongings:

Inside your home:

  • Always lock your doors, even when you're in.
  • Consider installing a burglar alarm or CCTV.
  • Keep windows closed or fit restrictors if left open. Strong locks make a big difference.
  • Use timer switches to leave lights or radio on when you're out.
  • Keep valuables and car keys out of sight and away from doors or letterboxes.
  • Outside your home:

  • Lock away ladders and tools that could help someone break in.
  • Keep sheds and garages locked.
  • Trim back overgrown shrubs to remove hiding spots.
  • Never leave spare keys in obvious places like under pots or in the letterbox.
  • Secure side and back gates with locks that can’t be accessed from outside.
  • If you see or hear anything suspicious, please call us on 101. If someone is trying to break in, call 999 immediately.

🦌 Deer Aware – Drive with Caution

We were recently called to a collision on the B2244 Hawkhurst to Sedlescombe road, where a vehicle struck a deer. Thankfully, the driver was uninjured, though understandably shaken. Sadly, the deer did not survive.

Please take extra care when driving through rural or wooded areas.

    🚨 Key Deer Safety Tips:

🦌 When are deer most active?
Deer are present year-round, but collisions peak May–June (when young deer disperse) and October–November (rutting season). Be especially alert at dawn and dusk, when visibility is low and deer are most active.

    🦌 Seen one? Expect more.
If a deer crosses your path, slow down, others may follow. Deer often move in groups and can behave unpredictably.

    🦌 Watch for signs.
Deer warning signs are placed in known crossing areas. If you see one, reduce your speed, stay alert, and be ready to stop.

    🦌 Use your lights wisely.
At night, use full-beam headlights when safe to do so. This can help you spot deer by the reflection in their eyes. If you see a deer, dip your lights, bright beams may cause them to freeze.

🦌 If you hit a deer:

  • Stop safely and turn on hazard lights.
  • Do not approach the deer, it may be injured and react unpredictably.
  • Call the police if the deer is on or near the road.
  • Check your vehicle before continuing.
  • Report the incident to your insurer, especially if you have comprehensive cover.
  • Stay safe and help protect our wildlife.

Supporting Young People Through Safety Education

Local Neighbourhood Youth Officers took part in this year’s Safety in Action week, hosted by East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service. This important event is designed to help Year 6 students from across Hastings and Rother learn how to recognise and respond to a range of everyday risks in a safe and informed way.

Through a series of interactive and engaging sessions, students explored key topics including water safety, road safety, alcohol awareness, personal safety, and basic first aid. These practical lessons are vital in helping young people build confidence, make safe choices, and look out for themselves and others as they move into secondary school and beyond.

We’re committed to supporting young people in our communities and helping them develop the knowledge and resilience they need to stay safe. Events like this are a great example of how we can work together with partners to make a positive impact.

A big thank you to all the children who took part, and to East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service for hosting such a valuable initiative.

We were pleased to apart of the 10th anniversary of the Heart of Sidley, an event at Sidley Recreation Ground on Canada Way, Bexhill.

The event was full of community spirit, with all stalls run by dedicated volunteers. There was music, dancing, and entertainment for all ages, and it was great to see so many smiling faces enjoying the day.

We also had the chance to hear about the exciting plans for the new community Hub, which will be built over the next year to replace the old football changing rooms. The new space will include a café, terrace, and meeting rooms, something we’re sure will be a brilliant addition for local residents.

It’s always a pleasure for us to be part of events like this, where we can connect with the community in a relaxed and positive setting. A big thank you to everyone who made the day such a success!

Following a report from a member of the public in Fairlight regarding a suspected abandoned vehicle, officers attended the scene and carried out checks. These enquiries revealed that the vehicle had previously been reported stolen and was displaying false number plates.

The vehicle was recovered, and the registered owner was informed.

We thank the public for their vigilance and continue to encourage anyone with concerns about suspicious activity to get in touch. Working together helps us keep our communities safe.

Experiencing a break-in, whether to your vehicle, shed, or garage, can be both emotionally distressing and financially damaging. This is especially true when high-value items such as work tools, bicycles, or gardening equipment are stolen.

Sadly, even when we recover stolen property during investigations, we often find ourselves unable to return many items to their rightful owners due to a lack of identifiable markings.

To help address this, Sgt McNab and Inspector Hart recently visited the Wicks store at Ravenside, Bexhill, where they engaged with customers, offered practical crime prevention advice, and distributed free DNA property marking kits.

    Inspector Hart commented:
“We understand the significant financial and emotional impact theft can have on victims. By using property marking kits, we’re able to link recovered items back to their rightful owners more easily. This simple step greatly improves the chances of returning stolen property and helps us bring offenders to justice.”

These kits contain a special liquid that enables you to mark your tools, bikes, and other valuable equipment with a unique identifier. The markings are invisible to the naked eye but can be detected under UV light, significantly increasing the chances of stolen property being returned.

If you would like a free DNA property marking kit, you can pick one up from Battle Police station. Please visit our website here Find a police station | Sussex Police for opening times.

On Saturday, we had the pleasure of attending the Little Common School FĂŞte, where we hosted a stall that proved to be a real hit with both children and adults alike.

We thoroughly enjoyed chatting with everyone, answering questions, sharing insights into policing, and giving the younger ones the chance to explore our police vehicle, complete with sirens and lights. They also had fun trying on parts of our uniform.

We were especially impressed by the thoughtful questions from the children, such as “Why do you love your job?” and “What’s your favourite thing about it?” The answer? No two days are ever the same, but above all, we love helping people in our communities.

A huge thank you to the organisers for inviting us. We had a fantastic time!

Scammers continue to target the most vulnerable in our communities, particularly older residents. That’s why it’s vital that everyone, especially those who are elderly or more at risk, is aware of the latest scam tactics and how to stay safe.

Yesterday, we were pleased to visit Dudwell St Mary Care Home in Etchingham, where we spoke with residents about how to recognise and report scams. These conversations are essential in helping people feel confident and protected.

A big thank you to Emma, the care home manager, for organising the session and ensuring residents could attend.

We are committed to tackling scammers at every opportunity and will continue working closely with our communities to raise awareness and prevent fraud.

If you think you’ve been targeted by a scam:

  • Report it to Action Fraud at www.actionfraud.police.uk or call 0300 123 2040
  • If someone suspicious comes to your door and you feel unsafe, call 999 immediately
  • Let’s stay vigilant and support one another in keeping our communities safe.
