Friday 6th September 2024 Sussex Alerts - Eastbourne Police REISSUED
Dear residents please find below a reissued alert following reports from residents that the previous alert sent was unreadable due to formatting issues, with thanks.
Police see significant decrease in reports of motorcycle thefts
Since the launch of a dedicated police operation; Operation Portman, to tackle motorcycle thefts in areas of Eastbourne and Wealden, we are pleased to report a decrease of 77% in the number of motorcycle thefts reported.
Chief Inspector Lewis for Eastbourne said: ‘These figures reflect the continued efforts of local teams and communities in both targeting offenders and highlighting offences in the area.
Within the last few weeks 8 arrests have also been made in relation to ‘Op Portman’, along with a number of motorcycles either being located by police or reunited with their owners.
Our investigations, alongside patrols and targeted police actions continue, as does our determination to catch offenders linked to motorcycle thefts.
We would also like to thank communities for their reporting of both crime and suspicious activities, as well as continue to encourage residents to further report any thefts or information around motorcycle thefts online quoting Op Portman’.
Of the arrests already made, this includes that of two males following a report of two teenage boys in balaclavas acting suspiciously and riding around the town on the 22nd August.
Police swiftly attended the call where two boys and a motorbike were spotted; after being seen by police officers they made off.
An area search was conducted and those matching the description given were located by police where they were detained and arrested on suspicion of the offences; theft of motor vehicle, and going equipped for theft, following interview both were released with strict bail conditions including curfew checks to help prevent further offences.
Owners of two-wheeled vehicles are encouraged to remain vigilant, and review their motorcycle security; the Secured By Design website; supported by police, offers valuable advice and tips to help protect their property from theft.
Operation Downsway continues
Following a number of road traffic accidents during the Summer months, officers continued their work to highlight the leading causes of serious injury and death on the roads of Sussex each year.
During the month of August officers have spent a number of hours up along Beachy Head and the surrounding roads; an area highlighted by collision data and community reporting, to conduct high-visibility patrols to act as a deterrent, as well as spending time speaking to drivers highlighting our road safety and driver awareness campaign ‘Operation Downsway’; highlighting the fatal 5 driving offences, and offering road users advice on keeping safe on the roads.
Each year we sadly see a number of both serious and fatal accidents across Sussex, with almost all attributed to drivers committing at least one of the fatal 5 driving offences; these are, excess speeding, drink and drug driving, not wearing a seat belt and using a mobile phone while driving.
As we head into the Autum months residents can continue to expect to see an increase in both Police enforcement activities and patrols with the objective to not only reassure our communities, but also to increase public confidence in local policing through road safety activities.
These activities will be in addition to the introduction of our yearly Operation Dragonfly (drink and drug campaigns) later in the year.
