APPEALS

Appeal for information after man was assaulted in Worthing 

Police are appealing for witnesses and information after a man was assaulted in Worthing town centre.

The incident happened on May 17 in the Montague Street area, and at the junction of Shelley Road and Gratwicke Road.

A 25-year-old man who was riding a bicycle reported being approached and assaulted by a group of men.

He required hospital treatment after the incident.

Officers believe the incident happened at about 10pm.

They have issued CCTV images of four men they wish to speak with in connection with the investigation.

Appeal after man is seriously injured in Worthing

Police are appealing for witnesses after a man in his 70s reported being assaulted at the junction of Chapel Road and Liverpool Road in Worthing on Thursday, May 23 at around 10.30am.
The victim sustained a serious injury and was taken to hospital for treatment, where he remains at this time.
If you saw what happened, or have dash cam footage or CCTV of the area from around the time of the incident, we ask you to make a report.

Witness appeal following serious collision in Lancing 

Police are appealing for witnesses following a serious collision in Lancing.

Officers were called to a report of a Ford Fiesta hitting a parked car on Chartwell Road shortly after 6.30am this morning (29 May).

A 55-year-old man, the driver of the Ford, was taken to hospital with life threatening injuries.

No other injuries were reported.

Police are investigating the collision and are trying to establish the full circumstances of the incident.

Officers are appealing for witnesses or anyone with information to come forward. This includes those with dashcam footage of a grey Ford Fiesta travelling Southbound on Busticle Lane, Lancing at approximately 6:30am.

CRIME REPORTS

 

Burglary - Since the last bulletin, there has been one report of a break in whilst the occupant was home and a gift bag stolen. The back door was open due to the occupant previously having breakfast in the kitchen and making the most of a sunny morning. The second burglary was a report of a shed being broken into and a mobility scooter stolen.

Please make sure your outbuildings and garages are locked and secure. We are continuing to investigate these burglaries and if you see anyone acting suspiciously around a property, please report it to us on 101 or 999 if you are witnessing a burglary in progress.

Make it more difficult for burglars by ensuring you protect your home, belongings and by checking your outside security before you go away.

Vehicle Crime - Over the past month, there has been a total of seventeen reports of vehicle crime, which includes theft from a motor vehicle, damage, thefts of registration number plates and thefts of a motor vehicle/bike. 

 

We are continuing to see thefts from commercial vehicles and tools being stolen, along with cars being broken into and items such as bags, wallets and cash being stolen. We urge you to remove all high value items from vans and to not leave any personal items on display in your vehicles. Please also ensure that your vehicles are secure when you leave them. 

 

Remember to make it as difficult as possible to prevent your vehicles being targeted!

NEWS

A thank you to our incredible volunteers! 

Last week Sussex Police recognised and celebrated the incredible hard work and dedication of all the volunteers in the force as part of National Volunteers’ Week, which is marking its 40th anniversary this year.

It included recognising the work of Special Constables, Community Speedwatch volunteers, Police Support Volunteers, and our Police Cadet leaders.

'Take time for one extra look' - road users asked in Summer Campaign

Taking just one extra look at a junction could save a life. That is the vital messaging Sussex Police is highlighting this summer during the national Two-Wheel campaign (3-16 June).

The Force is asking all road users to take responsibility to look out for each other and be vigilant while out and about, taking that important extra moment to watch out for motorcyclists.

Force shoplifting solve rates increase in 2024

Shoplifting solve rates have improved across the force over the last year, with an overall increase of more than 5%.

In 2022, the force’s average solve rates for shoplifting were 10.4% and in 2024, it is up to 15.6%.

West Sussex has seen the biggest increase, from 9.5% in 2022 to 16.1% in 2024.

Shoreham man sentenced to manslaughter 

A retired bricklayer has been sentenced for killing his wife following a murder investigation in Shoreham.

James Gumbrell, also known as Jim, was sentenced on Friday (24 May) for killing 59-year-old Deborah known as Debs at their home in Northbourne Close, Shoreham, on 24 October 2022.

Detective Chief Inspector Kimball Edey, of the Major Crime Team, said: "This is a tragic case in which a much-loved mother, grandmother and sister lost her life in horrific circumstances. 

"We would like to express our condolences to the family of Deborah and our thoughts are with you all during this difficult time."

Over 550 weapons taken off the street during week of action 

Over 550 weapons have been removed from the streets following Sceptre, a week of action implemented across Sussex as part of an initiative to tackle knife crime. From May 13 to May 19, various engagement activities were conducted in schools, universities, green spaces, towns, and city centres.
These efforts aimed to engage students and the wider community, informing them about the impact of knife crime and the dangers of carrying weapons. Man jailed for knife robbery at Worthing petrol station 

A robber who threatened a petrol station worker with a knife has been jailed. Matthew Maule entered the premises in Findon Road, Worthing, at about 5am on February 8 this year. A worker reported a robbery at the premises and the suspect had left the scene.

Sussex Police issued a public appeal to help identify and locate Maule, and he was subsequently arrested on suspicion of robbery and possession of a knife in a public place.

At Lewes Crown Court on May 3, Maule, aged 38, formerly a groundsman of Gravits Lane, Bognor, admitted robbery, possession of a knife in public, and possession of a bladed article in public.

He was sentenced to four years in prison.

 

Shoplifter jailed for prolific offending in Worthing 

A prolific shoplifter has been jailed for a number of thefts in Worthing. Karly Everson pleaded guilty to 14 counts of shoplifting when she appeared before Brighton Magistrates’ Court on 29 April.

Everson was responsible for 14 shoplifting incidents  between 11 March and 15 April, in which she stole more than £1000 worth of stock. In that time, Everson stole from: Co-op in Manor Parade, South Street, Plaza Parade and Cricketers Parade; Tesco Express in Dominion Road and Broadwater; B&M in Chatsworth Road and Superdrug in Montague Street.

She was arrested and charged on 18 April. Everson, 37, of no fixed address was sentenced to 18 weeks’ imprisonment and handed a five-year Criminal Behaviour Order (CBO).

The CBO prevents her from entering a number of stores in Worthing, as well as any Tesco in West Sussex or Co-op in Sussex.
