Police are appealing for witnesses to a serious collision on the A27 at Tangmere. The collision involving a white VW Polo and a pedestrian occurred on the westbound carriageway, close to the slip road to the A285, at about 1.20am on Sunday 5 November. A section of the road was closed for several hours while emergency services worked at the scene, and the public are thanked for their patience and understanding. The pedestrian – a 26-year-old local man – has been taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries. Anyone who saw what happened or captured any footage of the incident is asked to email collision.appeal@sussex.police.uk quoting Operation Cog. Police are particularly keen to hear from anyone who may have seen a man wearing a red hooded top and blue jeans walking in the area around the time of the collision.

Thousands of people enjoyed the spectacle of the Lewes Bonfire celebrations again this year. The historic event, which is one of the biggest of its kind in the country, attracted as many as 20,000 people onto the streets of Lewes on November 4. For the vast majority who attended, this year was again another highlight of the year. Following the event, Sussex Police Assistant Chief Constable Howard Hodges said: “This year’s bonfire celebrations passed without significant incident, and on behalf of the multi-agency group, I'd like to pass on our thanks to the community of Lewes for adhering to the message to stay local for bonfire events. “Emergency services, local authorities and transport operators worked closely with Bonfire societies and with volunteers and the local community to prepare for the night. “Police made three arrests during the event, while four people were taken to hospital with injuries. “Planning for the Lewes Bonfire celebrations always begins the day after the last one and it is both complex and challenging in equal measure both for us and the full range of multi-agency partners who work together to keep people safe. “We are pleased that overall this was an event that the vast majority of those attending could enjoy. “Planning is now already underway for Bonfire night in 2024.” Cllr Wendy Maples, Lead Cabinet Member for Neighbourhood Wellbeing at Lewes District Council, said: "So many people worked behind the scenes to ensure the success of this year's event - for which I know the town and its Bonfire Societies are very grateful. "I would like to thank the emergency services, St John's Ambulance service and council staff in Regulatory Services and Neighbourhood First for making sure this was a safe event. "Huge thanks to the Environment First crew for their fantastic work through the night to make sure Lewes was looking clean and tidy well before most people were out of bed.” East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service said: "As fireworks season continues, East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service would like to remind everyone to follow the firework code and take extra care with bonfires. Crime updates
Over the last week there have been two reports of burglaries across Arun district: West Street, Bognor and Surrey Street, Littlehampton.
We are reminding our residents to keep windows and doors locked when their property is unoccupied. Burglaries are often the result of burglars gaining entry through open or unlocked doors and windows. Ensure windows and doors are in good condition. Keep your doors and windows locked, especially if you are elsewhere in the house. Keep side gates locked at all times. Ensure that ladders and tools are locked away as an opportunistic burglar can find the tools they need in your shed or garage to break into your home.
Over the last week there have been twenty one reports of vehicle crime across Arun district. Vehicles have been broken into or targeted for their belongings in: Marshall Avenue, Bognor – Durban Road, Bognor – Aldwick Road, Bognor – Elbridge Avenue, Bersted – Selsey Avenue, Aldwick – Church Street, Littlehampton – Fort Road, Littlehampton – London Road, Houghton – Dukes Road, Slindon and Neptune Way, Yapton. One vehicle has been reported stolen in Bayford Road, Littlehampton. Vehicles have been reported damaged in Cygnet Walk, Bersted – Steyning Way, Bersted – Victoria Drive, Bognor – Farmer Close, Pagham – Sommerton Green, Felpham – Wick Street, Littlehampton – Hawthorn Road, Littlehampton – St Marys Drive, East Preston – Church Lane, Yapton and London Road, Arundel.
